Teaching Social Issues Using Middle-Grade Novels

How can teachers, parents, and librarians use fiction help children develop age-appropriate views of current social issues?

Children’s books make up a $3 billion industry. But their influence? Maybe incalculable. To talk about using middle-grade novels to teach about social issues, we invited Tracy LeGrand and Bibi Belford to join us. Bibi is the author of Crossing the Line, Canned and Crushed, and Another D for DeeDee. She’s been a classroom teacher, reading teacher, and literacy coach. Tracy has been an educator for 23 years in upper elementary and middle school grades, and she is currently a reading interventionist for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. She knows where to find the best french fries in town.
